Bowlers need to be tested for bowling action before debut

first_imgYajurvindra SinghThe law on chucking has to become more streamlined and forceful. Cricket, somehow, has shown leniency about the matter and as a result, many bowlers with dodgy actions have flourished and many batsmen have been unfairly dismissed. The record books are full of chuckers.Saeed Ajmal, the most versatile of the contemporary off-spinners, after six years of international cricket and more than 300 wickets, succumbed to a law that was made easy for a bowler’s existence – the 15-degree acceptable bend!One feels sorry for all the batsmen whom he bamboozled with his doosra and other bent-arm inventions. Banning him after so many years is precisely the tale that world cricket has to take seriously. The umpires on the field, as well as the third umpire and the match referee, need to be given the power to stop anyone who they feel has a questionable action.Today, the law requires the umpires to report it to the relevant authorities, who will thereafter take the necessary action to get the bowler reviewed. By then, he has ruined a few cricketers’ careers and won laurels for his side.Ajmal is a case in point. The astonishing finding was that all his deliveries were illegal. Cricket needs to utilise the biometric technology and implement it everywhere. Every international bowler should be tested and certified, if possible, before they debut.A conformity certificate seems the only way forward to eradicate chuckers. One gathers that most bowlers do bend their arm and so it has become even more imperative to use the latest technology. The game cannot go through the slow process followed presently, as with the amount of cricket being played, the offender could have a bagful of wickets before he is stopped.advertisementMy immediate thought goes to the highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, Muttiah Muralitharan. He was reported on quite a few occasions but through some flexibility in the laws, continued tormenting batsmen.Saeed AjmalI watched his bowling video closely and accept that he has a unique bend in his bowling arm. This, along with his very supple wrist, made it possible for him to bowl the doosra effectively. To prove his innocence, his bowling arm was plastered before he was made to bowl.He would have escaped all the humiliation if this would have been sorted out earlier. Bent-arm bowlers over the years have been a menace to batsmen. The effective use of such deliveries has been the bouncer for fast bowlers, the armer for left-arm spinners, and the doosra for off-spinners.Most cricket academies around the world have the facilities to film and analyse bowlers. The offenders could be identified and rectified at the initial stage of their careers rather than on the international stage.The only way to solve this issue is for a bowler to get an authorised compliance certification at the domestic level, without which, he should not be allowed to participate in any national or international tournaments.Each country should be made responsible, rather than wait for the system to catch up with the offender, as cricket for a batsmen is just a one-ball game.last_img read more

Cardiff City Face Transfer Ban over Non-payment of Emiliano Sala’s Fee: FIFA

Cardiff City face a three-window transfer ban unless they pay French club Nantes the first instalment for the transfer of Emiliano Sala who died in a plane crash on his way to join the Welsh club, world governing body FIFA said on Monday.FIFA released the full reasoning for their September decision that Cardiff must pay the agreed first instalment of 6 million euros (£5.2 million) to Nantes. After signing for Cardiff for £15 million in January, Sala was travelling to Wales from the French club when his plane crashed in the English Channel.The body of the 28-year-old Argentine striker was recovered nearly three weeks later after an underwater search found the wreckage.FIFA’s Players’ Status Committee said that if Cardiff does not pay the six million euros within 45 days of receiving bank details from Nantes, “A ban from registering any new players, either nationally or internationally, for the maximum duration of three entire and consecutive registration periods shall become effective”.The ban for three transfer windows would be lifted if Cardiff complied with the ruling in the meantime.Cardiff City did not immediately respond to a request for comment but the club had previously stated they intend to take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland.”Cardiff City FC is extremely disappointed at the decision of the Players’ Status Committee to award against the club,” the Welsh club said after the initial verdict.”It would appear the committee has reached its conclusion on a narrow aspect of the overall dispute, without considering the full documentation presented by Cardiff City FC to FIFA.”Nevertheless, there remains clear evidence that the transfer agreement was never completed in accordance with multiple contractual requirements which were requested by Nantes, thereby rendering it null and void.”FIFA’s ruling argued that the transfer had been officially completed before Sala’s death and therefore Cardiff remained obliged to make agreed payments.The club, relegated from the Premier League to the second-tier Championship last season, had argued that the circumstances surrounding Sala’s death, in a plane organised by an agent who brokered the transfer, meant Nantes were liable for damages caused to them. last_img read more

Rangers Shoot Out Senators, 2-1

first_imgOTTAWA, Ontario — Back home in Ottawa, Rangers defenseman Dan Boyle scored the shootout winner Nov. 14 as New York defeated the Ottawa Senators 2-1.“We’ve used Dan a couple of times before and he’s always had some pretty good moves,” said Rangers coach Alain Vigneault. “Shootouts — who knows, eh? You throw guys over the boards and it worked out for us tonight.”Eight of Ottawa’s 17 games have needed overtime or a shootout. The Senators are now 3-3 in shootouts and 1-1 in the 3-on-3 overtime.“We hung with them for 65 minutes and when it comes down to the skills competition it’s tough to let a point get away,” said Senators forward Bobby Ryan.Chris Kreider scored the lone goal in regulation for the Rangers, who have won eight in a row and have a point in 12 straight games.Henrik Lundqvist stopped 22 shots for his tenth win of the season.Captain Erik Karlsson scored the only goal for the Senators as Craig Anderson made 33 saves.In overtime, Ottawa’s Mike Hoffman hit the post twice and the Rangers’ Rick Nash hit the post as well.“It’s one of those things both teams weren’t afraid of losing and both teams wanted to win,” Karlsson said. “There were quality scoring chances and two good goaltenders and a couple of posts and we go to a shootout.”The Rangers outshot the Senators 10-7 in the second period and nearly took the lead in its final seconds, but Anderson stopped Mats Zuccarello to preserve the 1-1 tie.Kreider took exception to Zack Smith’s hit on Derek Stepan late in the period. Stepan was forced to go to the quiet room as he was hit in the head, but did return and said he was fine after the game. Stepan is hoping the league will review the hit.“I’m just happy I’m healthy,” he said. “I never saw him coming.”The teams exchanged power-play goals in the first period. Kreider opened the scoring at 2:31 as he tipped Kevin Hayes’ shot past Anderson.Ottawa tied the game four minutes later when Karlsson finished off a nice passing series to beat Lundqvist.“I thought it was a real good game, fast game,” said Senators coach Dave Cameron. “We had a pretty good idea how they were going to play and it was our challenge to match and I felt we did a pretty good job.”Karlsson now has three goals in his last three games after going the first 14 without a goal.TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

Feel Good Friday: Tiger-Distressed Denim

first_img Editors’ Recommendations 8 Great and Useful Housewarming Gifts Ideas The Peached Tortilla’s Fried Rice Recipe Is Just Plain Delicious Why Every Man Should Care About Slow Fashion Yup — you read that right. Denim distressed by big cats is totally a thing now, and surprisingly, it’s not horribly unethical either. Normally when animals are exploited for the sake of fashion it’s not a pretty picture, but this? This is actually a pretty brilliant idea. Not only is it good for the cats (it helps clean their teeth), but it also helps bring in much-needed revenue for the zoo they reside in.So how do you start making your own tiger-distressed denim? Easy. Just do what Japan’s Kamine Zoo did and follow these seven steps:Own one or more large predatory cats, or (preferably) an entire zoo.Purchase multiple sheets of raw, unwashed denimSew said denim sheets onto giant cat toys (car tires, balls, etc)Allow cats to gnaw, slobber, and chew on denim toys for a few daysRetrieve denim, sew into limited-edition jeansAuction jeans to the cat-loving masses on the InternetProfit.The geniuses who hatched this idea at Kamine Zoo recently sold off the first pairs of these so-called “Zoo Jeans” at auction. The minimum bid? 500 bucks. All proceeds generated from the auction either went directly back to the zoo to help improve the animals’ living conditions, or to the WWF to help fund its preservation efforts.Your move, G Star. Backlog of irregular asylum claims has ballooned to over 28000

first_imgOTTAWA — The backlog of asylum claims from irregular migrants awaiting a decision on whether they can stay in Canada has grown to over 28,000.New statistics from the Immigration and Refugee Board show over 5,000 new refugee claims were filed between July and September of this year.This was just over 1,100 fewer claims than the previous quarter.But despite a recent boost in resources and staffing from government, the board finalized only about 1,600 claims in the same period, so the backlog got longer.The Liberals promised $74 million over two years in the 2018 budget to address the major backlog of refugee claims, many of which are coming from “irregular” migrants crossing the Canada-U.S. border away from official crossings.Refugee claims from other groups have also been on the rise, which has led to a current total backlog of over 64,000 refugee claims at the IRB.Wait times have also grown — refugees who arrive in Canada today will wait almost two years before final decisions on their claims are reached.The Canadian Presslast_img read more

Decapitated Body Found at Scene of Terrorist Attack in France

Rabat- At approximately 11:00 am on the morning of Friday June 26th, French police found a decapitated male body and a flag covered in Islamist inscriptions near the US owned Air Products Gas Company building, following an attack on the factory at 10:00 am in the southeastern region of Saint-Quentin Fallavier.As of 12:00 pm, the Dauphiné Libéré newspaper reports that the decapitated victim has been identified as the manager of a transport company located 20 miles from the attack, who was on factory grounds because of a delivery.Police say an attacker, now arrested and identified as 35-year-old Yassine Salim, was seen carrying an Islamist flag at the time of the attack, where one person was killed and two others were injured. French police report that the attack began “mid-morning when two men crashed a car into the entrance of a gas factory in Saint-Quentin-Fallavier in southeastern France, hitting gas canisters and touching off an explosion.”“The suspect entered the factory and set off several small explosive devices,” said a police source.“According to the initial finding of the inquiry, one or several individuals on board a vehicle drove into the factory. An explosion then took place,” said the source.The French ministry confirms that the second suspect was killed in the attack by a firefighter.The ministry has commented on the attacker as well, reporting that the arrested suspect was under suspicion for links with a radical Salafist group.French president François Hollande has expressed with certainty that this was a terrorist attack with intentions of blowing up the building.Terrorist attacks also occurred on the Imperial Marhaba hotel in the Tunisian beach resort of Sousse this morning, where at least 27 people, mostly tourists, were murdered.One gunman armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle lay where police had shot him dead, reports the Guardian.The details of the attack are still being investigated.Morocco World News. After she is heard getting upset, a member of the public intervenes and is told by the guard that it is “none of [his] business.”Finally, a member of staff tells her to stop filming, and when she refuses offers to serve her.The student told the Guardian: “I thought: ‘It’s finally happening to me,’ like it has to so many hijabis. It didn’t feel real because I had seen so many videos like this and it was finally happening to me in real life. I was in so much disbelief.”The friend I was with was shocked and scared, and said it was a risky situation. When it was over, I finally realised how these situations can become dangerous. This is not a one-off thing.”She said she will never go to McDonald’s again.A spokesperson for the chain said in a statement: “McDonald’s does not have a policy in place which restricts or prevents anyone wearing a hijab, or any other religious dress, from entering the restaurant.”We welcome customers of all faiths and would like to apologise to the customer as this situation should not have taken place. We are taking this matter extremely seriously and are addressing this with the individuals involved.” A woman was turned away from McDonald’s in London because she was wearing a hijab, as is shown in a shocking video.The 19-year-old student, who does not want to be named, said she lives down the road from the store, on Seven Sisters road in Holloway, and that she had never faced that sort of discrimination before.She said she was stopped from entering the building unless she took off her hijab, and then began filming the security guard as he appeared to continue to bar her from coming in.He is seen  in a video posted to Twitter indicating to her to take her headscarf off.The fast-food restaurant chain admitted the event took place – but said it was not company policy and shouldn’t have happened.The British Muslim of Middle Eastern descent asks the security guard in the video why she can’t enter McDonald’s, and he is seen replying: “It’s just a matter of taking it off.”She replied: “It’s not just a matter of taking it off. I wear this for religious reasons and I’m not ashamed of it, and I will stand in line and I will get the food I want, because this isn’t OK.”last_img read more

The Bucs and Cardinals are in different places ros

first_imgThe Bucs and Cardinals are in different places roster-wise. Tampa Bay is up-and-coming and hoping to contend. Arizona fields a lot of veteran talent looking for a last shot at making a Super Bowl run. Regardless, there are going to be some great athletes on the field on Sunday afternoon. Which five can most impact the game’s final score?• The Bucs aren’t good enough to be the best in the division (Bucs Nation)The reality is that the Buccaneers aren’t the best team in the division, and they’re not even close right now. They’ve struggled to get to 2-2 against a fairly weak schedule and while they haven’t been bad, they’ve been disappointing—and nowhere near the best team in the division.Wednesday, October 11• Series History: Buccaneers-Cardinals (Buccaneers.com)The Buccaneers have a chance to tie the all-time series with Arizona with a win on Sunday, which would also represent some payback after a lopsided loss in Glendale a year ago.• Justin Evans Speeding Up Again (Buccaneers.com)An offseason injury cost rookie S Justin Evans developmental time and slowed his integration into the defense, but he looked up-to-speed in his first start last week and is ready to contribute more. All things considered, 2-2 is an okay place for the Bucs to be right now. There are some winnable games coming up over the next few weeks. Tampa Bay needs to take advantage, starting on Sunday in Arizona against the struggling Cardinals.Saturday, October 14• Bucs-Cardinals: Tampa Bay Times staff predictions for Sunday’s 4:05 p.m. game (Tampa bay Times)For the past couple of years, the Bucs have lost games they should win. This feels like one of those games. Tampa Bay is better than Arizona. But something feels off about this one. Bucs struggle and lose.• Buccaneers: Five Bucs to watch in week six versus Cardinals (The Pewter Plank)If the Bucs are going to walk out of Arizona with a win, they will need to shut down the trio of receivers that Arizona has. Larry Fitzgerald, J.J. Nelson and Jaron Brown will attempt to put on an aerial attack versus the Bucs Sunday, can they handle the heat?• Buccaneers-Cardinals Scouting Report: Keep your head on a swivel, Jameis (Tampa Bay Times)How Winston responds Sunday will tell us quite a bit about his progression. When the teams met last season, Arizona’s blitz derailed the young quarterback, who was starting just the 18th game of his career. In the 40-7 loss, Winston completed half of his passes, threw four picks and posted a 39.2 rating. It stands as the worst game of his career. Derrick Hall satisfied with D-backs’ buying and selling • Buccaneers Injury Report, October 11 (Buccaneers.com)The Buccaneers’ injury-plauged defense could be getting some support this weekend, partictularly at linebacker. Both Lavonte David and Kwon Alexander returned to practice on Wednesday, as did safety T.J. Ward. Here is the Buccaneers’ full injury report:• Cardinals’ Bruce Arians sees ‘unbelievable potential’ in Jameis Winston (Tampa Bay Times)Winston’s lowest-rated effort in his 36 career games came in last year’s loss at Arizona — a 39.8 rating, matching his career high with four interceptions with only one touchdown pass in 52 attempts. Winston only has three interceptions in his first four games this season — none in the last two — and Arians likes what he’s seen.• Gerald McCoy: ‘Uproar’ would result if NFL players can’t protest during anthem (Tampa Bay Online)NFL commissioner Roger Goodell sent a memo to all 32 team owners on Tuesday, saying a proposal would be discussed at next week’s league meetings that would require all players to stand during the anthem. Other Bucs players on Tuesday expressed their appreciation for the freedom that the Bucs — both from the Glazer family that owns the team to coach Dirk Koetter — allowed players to express themselves as they wanted on the issue. All week long, we’ll take you to Tampa Bay to give you an inside look at what’s happening with the Buccaneers as they prepare to face the Cardinals.It’s Behind Enemy Lines…Sunday, October 15• Buccaneers Film Study: Watching the 2017 Arizona Cardinals (The Pewter Plank)For the Buccaneers and Cardinals, these are two very different franchises than when they met last season.One is expected to be on an upward swing, while the other is starting to descend after looking like a Super Bowl contender not too long ago.• Lavonte David expected to make return from ankle sprain (ESPN NFL Nation)In Week 3 against the Minnesota Vikings, David was carted off the field with a medial ankle sprain, forcing him to miss games against the New York Giantsand New England Patriots.• Buccaneers game plan: Attacking and defending the Cardinals (The Pewter Plank)The Bucs’ offensive line has played well above average in pass protection thus far this season. If that trend continues and quarterback Jameis Winston doesn’t repeat the 4 interception game from a year ago. Their passing game should have no problem keeping the chains moving and getting into the redzone.• Buccaneers at Cardinals: Preview, broadcast info for Week 6 (The Pewter Plank) • Bucs eager to erase bad feelings after ’embarrassing’ loss to Cardinals last year (ESPN NFL Nation)If you ask around the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ locker room, the Arizona game in Week 2 last year is still somewhat of a sore subject. They turned the ball over five times and lost 40-7. Quarterback Jameis Winston threw four interceptions.• Buccaneers: First quarter awards for the 2017 season (The Pewter Plank)Through their first four games, there’s been obvious winners during that span. Winning comes with accolades and awards. Let’s look at those players and what you can look forward to from them during the second quarter of football.• Buccaneers: A litmus test in Arizona (The Pewter Plank)With the first quarter of the season completed the Buccaneers now have to prove whether they’re the same mediocre team from last year, or an improved playoff competitor. Against the Cardinals on Sunday they can show how far they’ve come. Unless they’ve managed to bleach their memory clear of it, I doubt many Buccaneer fans have forgotten what happened in week two of last season.• Buccaneers at Cardinals: Five game-changing players for Week 6 (The Pewter Plank) • Buccaneers Round Table: Offensive Keep, Trade, and Release (The Pewter Plank)Trade one, cut one, and release one.For this, we’re starting with the offense, and the candidates are Jameis Winston, Mike Evans, and Doug Martin.Each writer has been presented this premise. They each had to come up with their selections and reasons why they’d trade, cut, release each of these three players.Friday, October 13• Bucs return to scene of their worst 2016 loss (Tampa Bay Times)“Last year was unfortunate for us,” said quarterback Jameis Winston, who had a career-high five turnovers, including four interceptions, in what remains the lowest-rated game of his three-year NFL career. “The turnovers kind of put us out of it. … Turning the ball over was the biggest part.”• Bucs journal: Rookie O.J. selling sperm or eggs is illegal in China Sperm banks get around the regulation by offering men "subsidies" In the case of Peking University Third Hospital donors receive a 5000 yuan (or $770) subsidy Last year sperm banks in Shanghai and Hubei province offered an iPhone 6 in lieu of an official payment Chinas controversial family-planning policy which for decades limited most urban families to a single child and many rural ones to two has worked too well Just at the point where China would naturally be profiting from a youth bulge to fuel its economy the nation is facing a decline in its labor force By 2030 Chinas population will begin to shrink The family-planning policy has also skewed Chinas population with too many males and too many elderly As a consequence the national government finally did what demographers have advised for years: relax the draconian one-child rule Still many Chinese families particularly from the urban middle class have little interest in raising more than one child Its a problem that has plagued other affluent societies in which not enough children are being born for populations to sustain themselves "My wife and I think raising more than one child is too tiring in a big city like Beijing" says the IT programmer who was donating to the Peking University sperm bank and has a 1-year-old daughter of his own "We dont want to have another child in the near future" Some families however do want to take advantage of Chinas family-planning reforms which allow everyone to have a second child Among these ranks are many older couples that are more likely to have trouble conceiving Nationwide Chinas infertility rate has been increasing in part because of rising pollution levels and increasingly sedentary lifestyles that affect reproductive health Yet surrogacy is legally discouraged while in vitro fertilization is nowhere near as common as in the West Even with sperm banks health authorities have been deluged by demand For instance each province is only allowed to have a single sperm bank while those with a population of more than 100 million can have two Thats hardly sufficient if even a fraction of Chinese couples decides to procreate past a single child As a result illegal sperm banks and clinics offering surrogacy have proliferated (Surrogacy is not banned outright but medical staff and institutions are not allowed to provide such services) Outside Peking University Third Hospital advertisement cards are scattered on the street offering a range of illicit reproductive services: surrogacy sperm and eggs for sale test-tube babies and sex testing (Because of the traditional Chinese preference for boys fetal sex testing is not allowed in hospitals lest parents be temped to abort female fetuses) "The underground market is thriving" says sexologist Jiang "but its very dangerous" With reporting by Yang Siqi / Beijing Contact us at editors@timecomFormer Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode has prayed that those people who argue that herdsmen are not Fulanis will be visited by the “terrorists” Fani-Kayode has been involved in a running battle on Twitter with former media to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan Reno Omokri over a statement by former vice-president Atiku Abubakar that Fulani herdsmen should not be stigmatized as criminals He earlier called Omokri a dishonest and staunch supporter of Atiku Abubakar for calling him out on his opinion piece ‘Fulani Herdsmen from Moon’ Omokri in his reaction called on Fani-Kayode to apologize for misquoting the Vice President and that he should stop lying The former Minister has now taken it a notch further with strong prayers “To the slavish fools and useful idiots that say that the Fulani herdsmen are not Fulani My prayer is that the terrorists visit their homes and as they do “one corner” with their wives and butcher their children they should ask them in Fufude whether they are Fulani or Chinese” Fani-Kayode tweeted on Sunday Benue state governor Samuel Ortom has reacted to Governor Simon Lalong’s claim that he warned him against implementing anti-grazing law Lalong had said he warned Ortom against implementing anti-grazing law while commenting on Benue killings Ortom while speaking to a delegation of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) on Friday stated that Lalong initially denied that he made the comment over anti grazing law and later refused to pick his calls However Ortom noted that even if Lalong had warned him he would have still gone ahead with the decision He said “Yesterday somebody drew my attention that he (Lalong) made a comment that he warned me not to implement the law and I was wondering if my colleague from Plateau state could say that;
