Next step for NBA is hiring women in positions of power

The Toronto Raptors have Teresa Resch as vice president of basketball operations and player development, and Dr. Lisa Callahan is chief medical officer for both the Knicks and the WNBA’s Liberty. The Miami Heat recently hired Ruth Riley Hunter as its newest television and radio analyst, a move in motion before Silver talked about wanting more women in the NBA.Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace has seen the number of women in the NBA jump dramatically since he joined the league in 1986 and believes its heading in the right direction. Chantal Hassard has been with the Grizzlies since the franchise was in Vancouver and is entering her third season as VP of team operations and player programs. Memphis also just brought back Nicki Gross as a basketball analyst after she was the D-League’s only woman assistant in 2015 with Iowa.“I think it adds a viewpoint, a skillset that is very beneficial for the teams,” Wallace said.Silver wants teams hiring more women, including jobs with power, so the NBA is going to help. The NBA plans an event at the All-Star break in Charlotte, North Carolina, in February to grow the “pipeline of female talent in basketball operations roles.”Lapchick said hiring more women has to be a combination of efforts by both the NBA and its teams.“Teams saw the results in Dallas with no women in leadership to stop/confront bad behavior, which I believe is not uncommon toward women in the workplace in and out of sport,” Lapchick told the AP. “Adam has the respect to push and I am impressed by the NBA’s actions after the decline in gender grade when the Report Card was published followed by the post investigation in Dallas.”Ethan Casson, CEO of the Minnesota Timberwolves and the WNBA’s Lynx, said it can’t be a quota approach — and believes there are qualified women in the candidate pools. About 40 percent of Minnesota’s full-time employees are women with 35 percent of department heads and above women. He noted how transparent the NBA and its teams have been on this issue.“It’s constantly challenging your organization’s thinking and creating what that environment is, and that’s what makes the diversity inclusion so important,” Casson said. “You’re a better organization when you’re built that way from the ground up.” Tokyo Olympics: Costs hit almost $25 billion—may go higher Sports Related Videospowered by AdSparcRead Next LATEST STORIES Gov’t to employ 6,000 displaced by Taal Tim Cone, Ginebra set their sights on elusive All-Filipino crown Memphis guard Mike Conley said it’s important for basketball, business and society itself to have women in positions of authority.“We welcome it, and we do want to see more of that,” Conley said, “and I think that will help bridge that gray area and all the things that have been happening with the Mavs and situations like that and hopefully it will never occur” again. The NBA earned an A+ for racial hiring practices but a B for its gender hiring practices this summer from The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sports . That puts the NBA “significantly above” other professional sports, even as the number of women hired at the team level dropped for a third straight year with the percentage of women in team vice presidents and professional staff dipping as well, according to the report’s author, Richard Lapchick. When the NBA began investigating a report of sexual harassment and improper workplace conduct involving the former team president, the Mavericks did not have one woman at the executive level. Owner Mark Cubanhired former AT&T senior executive Cynthia Marshall as CEO and president in February , promoted four women to executive roles and now has eight women among 18 leadership roles.A memo obtained by The Associated Press last month shows the NBA plans workshops in Atlanta and Los Angeles in mid-November on the diversity and inclusion efforts. Airlines fail to satisfy in survey

first_imgATLANTA – Bankruptcy can be a wake-up call for airlines about the need to run their operations more efficiently, but it also can shine a light on a more basic challenge like making customers happy. UAL Corp.’s United Airlines and Delta Air Lines Inc., both of which restructured under Chapter 11 in recent years, ranked last and next-to-last, respectively, among airlines in terms of customer satisfaction in a survey to be released today by the University of Michigan. Marks were only slightly better for AMR Corp.’s American Airlines, which teetered on the verge of bankruptcy before winning employee concessions in 2003, and Northwest Airlines Corp., which is currently in bankruptcy. “The first step in improvement here is to recognize that something is wrong,” said Claes Fornell, a University of Michigan business professor and director of the research center that compiled the data. The airlines said they are working hard to improve the experience of their customers. “We know the service is not where it should be as far as baggage delivery,” said Betsy Talton, a spokeswoman for Atlanta-based Delta. “We’re concentrating on that this year so that we see significant improvements.” Tim Wagner, a spokesman for Fort Worth, Texas-based AMR, said there isn’t much the airlines can do when weather delays flights. “The one thing we can do is focus on the things we can control, and that’s our face-to-face interaction with customers,” Wagner said. There were some bright spots for a few airlines in the survey. Dallas-based Southwest Airlines Co. ranked first, and was one of only two airlines mentioned by name in the survey that improved in terms of customer satisfaction this year compared with last year. Houston-based Continental Airlines Inc. was the other. “We’ve done as well as we have up to date by making sure our customers have a rich experience, and that’s largely due to our people,” said Beth Harbin, a spokeswoman for Southwest, which also is one of the few consistently profitable airlines. About 20,000 people were asked during the first quarter of this year to rate their level of satisfaction as customers of companies in a variety of industries, including the airlines. An American Customer Satisfaction Index, on a scale of 1 to 100, was created based on the responses to questions about overall satisfaction, intention to be a repeat customer and perception of quality, value and expectations. The index for the airline industry as a whole fell to 63 from 65 last year. Southwest had the highest index with 76, up from 74 last year. United’s was the lowest at 56. Bringing up the rear was Delta at 59 and American at 60. Eagan, Minn.-based Northwest was at 61. “The same problems that have pulled airline passenger satisfaction down the past few years – disenchanted employees, increasing fuel costs, bankruptcy, and now also record levels of lost, delayed, and damaged luggage – cause it to drop again,” the researchers said in their analysis. Talton said Delta, which exited bankruptcy on April 30, has added new in-flight entertainment and other products to give customers a better experience. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. DD Cooking: Let’s all ‘Return to Sonder’!

first_imgSo you may have have noticed over the last few weeks our logo for Sonder is part of the article that you are now reading.A lot of folk have been asking me what Sonder means or more what Sonder stands for , so I’ll give you a wee insight to what it is.Sonder is the last 6 letters of my surname shuffled anderson ……..Sonder! You didn’t see that one! It is also the title of Eve Belle’s first solo EP and I’ve mentioned Eve before in other articles.Eve is a wonderfully talented singer and we hope to have her preform over the winter in Sonder. When I first met eve she was performing at the greenroom in Voodoo , she sat beside me , guitar by her side waiting for her time to sing , when she sang there wasn’t a sound in the whole venue just her , it was a magical performance that I’ll never forget. After that night I made enquires and got a copy of her E.P. Sonder . The feeling and love that she puts into every song reminded me of what I wanted Sonder to be in reality .It was Eve who gave me the description of the word and it is available online too but here is the actual meaning. It explains everything that Sonder is to me & you .I’ve underlined the bit that caught my eye .“The realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own—populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries and inherited craziness—an epic story that continues invisibly around you like an anthill sprawling deep underground, with elaborate passageways to thousands of other lives that you’ll never know existed, in which you might appear only once, as an extra sipping coffee in the background, as a blur of traffic passing on the highway, as a lighted window at dusk”You see we are all part of the story. Even if you only visit us once you will be part of Sonder, you will have left your impression on our story .It’s a bit posh but that’s the way I wanted it . Never for money always for love ………as Talking Heads sang in their song , maybe I’m naive too !I have to admit Sonder has been a lifelong ambition and it shows you with hard work, dedication and support from you, good friends and family anything is possible . We are absolutely delighted with the response so far, which brings me to the next part of our story. We will have our official opening at the end of September and everyone is invited! To coincide with the celebrations we are launching our loyalty card , not one of those ones you get a wee stamp on but a real one just like you get in the shops !Each card will have €5.00 credit on it so you can come in and enjoy a coffee to see what it’s all about . Also from next week I’ll be giving away a free dessert for a recipe of the week. So if you have a recipe that you enjoyed send it to me along with a picture of the dish and I’ll pick a winner every week and publish it here.It doesn’t matter what the dish is , if it’s something you enjoy cooking then send it on . The email address is below. I’d love to hear from you and see what you all are cooking .So this weeks recipe as promised is a fillet of pork dish. Pork fillet it not very expensive and its low in fat , high in protein and easy to cook .Ask your butcher to trim the excess fat off for you and any of the gristle that may be present.Send your recipes and photos to crestmediapartners@gmail.com for your chance to win a free dessert. I’ll give a dessert away every week until the official opening in late September .Follow me on snapchat @ cheftothestars Instagram @ chefmanderson or like our page Sonder on Facebook. You can listen to Eve on sound cloud https://soundcloud.com/eve-murtagh/ or on follow her Facebook www.facebook.com/EveBelle/So to the recipe .Medallion of pork , mushroom , tarragon & white pepper sauce .You will need for 4 covers1 pork fillet , trimmed and sliced into 1 inch medallions.450g of button mushrooms , sliced1 medium white onion , sliced thinly .20g of cracked black pepper .500mls of pouring cream .Butter for cooking .1 bunch of tarragon , roughly 20g chopped .2 tablespoons of good gravey granules1 measure of whiskey or brandy1 tsp of hot mustard (optional ) .MethodPre heat your oven to 100cFlatten the medallions out with a meat hammer or even a rolling pin wrapped in cling film .In a large frying pan heat a little butter and add the medallions , cooking for 3 minutes each sideWhen nearly cooked remove from the pan and keep them warm in the oven .Using the same pan add a little more butter , then the mushrooms , onions and cook until softened.Add the whiskey/brandy and flame , then add the cracked pepper , mustard and cream .Allow to boil and reduce the heat and simmer for a few minutes .Sprinkle in the gravey granules and allow to thicken , finally add the meat & tarragon .Cook for another few minutes until the meT is cooked through and the sauce is to your desired consistency , if you think it’s to thin and a little more gravy granules .Serve with rice , mashed potatoes or even thick slices of crusty bread to mop up all that tasty sauce .DD Cooking: Let’s all ‘Return to Sonder’! was last modified: August 5th, 2016 by Martin AndersonShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:donegalMartin AndersonSonderlast_img read more
