The sister of an American tourist says the father of one of the British Columbia men named as a suspect in the woman’s death isn’t accepting his share of responsibility for her family’s sorrow.Kennedy Deese, whose sister Chynna Deese was found dead along with her Australian boyfriend Lucas Fowler near a highway in northern B.C. in mid-July, posted a statement to Facebook on Saturday accusing Alan Schmegelsky of playing the victim.Deese also said Schmegelsky isn’t “cut from the same cloth” as her family, and that he doesn’t acknowledge his own hand in his child’s upbringing and ultimate demise.“Your sorrow is for yourself. You cannot relate to us, as we had no doings in the cause of your pain, when you’ve played a part in the cause of our pain,” Deese wrote.“To the murderers and their family, the appropriate action when mistakes are made is taking responsibility. The proper public response would have been a genuine apology. But we still forgive you and have mercy.”RCMP said Wednesday that they believe they found the bodies of Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, from Port Alberni, B.C., in dense brush in northern Manitoba following a massive manhunt that lasted close to two weeks.Police have said they’re waiting for the results of an autopsy before confirming the identities. The two men were named as suspects in the deaths of Deese and Fowler, and were charged with second-degree murder in the killing of Leonard Dyck, a university lecturer from Vancouver.Alan Schmegelsky told Australia’s “60 Minutes” TV program late last week that he won’t believe his son is a murderer until he gets facts, saying he knows how the families of the victims feel.“I’m so sorry for what’s happened. Whether it’s my son or whether it’s something else, we don’t know. I have just lost my son. I know exactly how you feel,” Schmegelsky told the program.“It hurts a lot. He was my only child. I’ll never get to hug him again. I’ll never get to tease him again. I’ll never get to spend a minute with him again.”“At least I know where he is. His troubles are over.”When reached via Facebook messenger on Sunday and asked about his response to Deese’s post, Schmegelsky said she could go on “60 Minutes” and that he could arrange it.“I manned up. I have nothing to hide,” he wrote. While police were still hunting for the pair, Schmegelsky sent a 132-page book to reporters about his own life. He described it as a novelization of his son’s troubled life and his numerous encounters with police and courts, and said he wanted to highlight how what he called a “broken system” shaped him and Bryer.Kennedy Deese shot back that her own family suffered challenges, but doesn’t “play the victim of a broken system.”“There is no white flag of surrender for my family. We are not defeated by divorce, mental health, violence, poverty and socioeconomic constraints, domestic disputes, alcohol or drugs, social media and bullying, feelings of loneliness, or disparities,” Deese wrote, noting that her sister rose to become the first generation of her immediate family to go to college.“We have the courage to ask for and offer help. We are strong, and stand strong together right now in the face of all of these adversities that have come upon us.”RCMP Assistant Commissioner Kevin Hackett told a news conference Wednesday that determining a motive will be “extremely difficult” if the identities are confirmed through autopsies because investigators can’t interview Schmegelsky or McLeod. He did not commit to providing details of the ongoing investigation. The Canadian Press
After making waves with its controversial placement of Jordan Peele’s horror satire “Get Out” in the comedy/musical category (not to mention passing over Peele in the screenplay category entirely), and despite the film unequivocally leading the way with critical kudos so far this season, the HFPA sent the film home empty-handed. Advertisement Facebook SNUB: Female StorytellersIt was already an unfortunate note that none of this year’s female directors were nominated in the best director category (as Natalie Portman made clear with her barb in helping to present the award), but in awarding “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” its screenplay prize, the HFPA froze out three female screenwriters in Liz Hannah (co-screenwriter of “The Post”), Vanessa Taylor (co-screenwriter of “The Shape of Water” and Greta Gerwig (“Lady Bird”). Of course, Globes voters are not beholden to check off a box in lieu of going with what they like (and by many accounts, “Three Billboards” was one of the group’s favorite films on the whole). Of course, “Lady Bird” did win best picture, comedy/musical, but the win was tempered by lack of recognition for Gerwig’s achievements. Login/Register With: SURPRISE: “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”In truth, maybe it’s a surprise from the outside, but Martin McDonagh’s film was said to be the group’s overall favorite film this year and that held true to the end. Still, “The Shape of Water” (Variety‘s pick to win) and “The Post” were formidable competition, the former picking up the director prize. Ultimately, though, the HFPA showered “Three Billboards” with love: four awards in total, knocking out some of the season’s strongest players along the way. The film side offered a few more big snubs, with critical favorites like “Get Out” and “Call Me By Your Name” being shut out.FILM:SNUB: “Get Out”
Recent floods cut off many transport routes and utilities, inundated buildings and caused further disruptions to livelihoods, aggravating the impact of the catastrophic monsoonal floods earlier this year, according to OCHA.In rural areas of the southern regions, where the rain-swollen Gumti and Kakri rivers burst through already weakened protective embankments and flooded 100 villages, there has been considerable damage to fish farms, seedbeds and vegetable cultivation, as well as to valuable rice paddies planted after recession of the recent monsoon floods. Although the heavy rains have relented, severe floods are now occurring in the southwest. Some 600,000 people have been affected, thousands more have had to take refuge on embankments and in schools, and 10,000 hectares of crops and 700 tons of fish stock have been lost, OCHA said. The UN World Food Programme (WFP) and the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) are coordinating efforts to fight serious malnutrition in the post-flood period. UNICEF will provide children and pregnant and lactating women in the most vulnerable households with fortified food and supplements to counter anaemia, and support a nationwide campaign to provide Vitamin A capsules and de-worming tablets for children. In complementary efforts, WFP is trying to provide vulnerable families with food items to improve nutrition and food security. Extra rations of fortified blended food will be given to infants and young children as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women. The agency will also distribute 750 grams of high-energy biscuits daily for over the next 10 months among 80,000 primary school children in the worst flood-affected districts. A total of 903,800 households, or about 4,519,000 people, will receive 30 kilograms of grain each per month. To date, only $62.5 million of the $210 million sought through a UN appeal for Bangladesh has been received.

The cuts are delayed by two months under the compromise.Lawmakers promise to replace those across-the-board cuts with more targeted steps that could take longer to implement.Obama, speaking from Hawaii, where he is on vacation with his family, said he is willing to consider more spending cuts and tax increases to reduce the deficit. But he said he will not compromise over his insistence that Congress lift the debt ceiling. The nation’s credit rating was downgraded the last time lawmakers threatened inaction on the debt ceiling, in 2011.“If Congress refuses to give the United States the ability to pay its bills on time, the consequences for the entire global economy could be catastrophic,” Obama said. “Our families and our businesses cannot afford that dangerous game again.”If elected officials from both parties “focus on the interests of our country above the interests of party, I’m convinced we can cut spending and raise revenue in a manner that reduces our deficit and protects the middle class,” Obama said.In the Republican address, Rep. Dave Camp of Michigan said that as attention again turns to the debt limit, “we must identify responsible ways to tackle Washington’s wasteful spending.”Americans know that “when you have no more money in your account and your credit cards are maxed out, then the spending must stop,” Camp said. ‘Fiscal cliff’ crisis barely over, Obama presses for action on raising US borrowing limit by Matthew Daly, The Associated Press Posted Jan 5, 2013 9:16 pm MDT

In counties Wicklow and Tipperary two people purchased in excess of €1,000 worth of vouchers. In Galway, another person was scammed out of €2,200. In Dublin, one person attempted to purchase €1,000 in iTunes gift cards at a supermarket, before a member of staff became suspicious and contacted gardaí.The scam works like this:The victim will receive a phone call or voicemail from the scammer, claiming to be a representative of an organisation to which they claim the victim owes money.Upon contact with the victim, the scammers will insist immediate payment is required, suggesting the payment needs to be made by purchasing iTunes gift cards from a retailer. In some of these cases, victims were told they are facing criminal charges.Once the victim has purchased these cards, the scammers will ask the victim to share the 16-digit code on the back of the card over the phone. Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram Melbourne is set for one of the biggest fireworks spectacular tonight. Worth about $2.8 million, 8.5 tonnes of fireworks will light up the sky at the stroke of midnight accompanied by a ten minute music track. The fireworks will be launched from more than 20 sites in and around Melbourne’s CBD.Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle says organisers have moved the focus away from the CBD this year to encourage people to spread out across the city. Victorian Deputy Premier Peter Ryan says more than 420 general duty police officers will patrol Melbourne’s streets, backed by about 175 transit police, with Protective Services Officers (PSOs) manning the Flinders Street hub until 7:00 am (AEDT) on Tuesday.“I implore people to conduct themselves appropriately, make the right choices and don’t do stupid things on New Year’s Eve,” said Mr Ryan. This New Year’s Eve police will be issuing on-the-spot fines for loutish behaviour, while Ambulance Victoria is putting on an extra 60 paramedics and bike units in the city. There will be three official live sites on the night featuring entertainment at Flagstaff Gardens, Treasury Gardens and Docklands. An early family-oriented fireworks display will kick off at 9:30 pm (AEDT) at Yarra Park, enabling families to enjoy the celebrations early and beat the midnight rush. Public transport will be free from 6:00 pm until the first normal services on New Year’s Day and will run through the night. City loop stations will be closed before midnight so all passengers must board at Flinders Street or Southern Cross stations.Source: AAP

From dope movies like Scream, Valentine, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, we all love a good story that involves a little slicing and dicing every so often. From Waxwork Comics, we’re given a story that is a brilliant homage to the classic slashers with a punk twist. Poser #1 is something totally original that will slash your insides. It knocks you off your feet or stab you in the back, and you’ll be down for each other.via Waxwork ComicsMatt Miner writes a suspenseful and brutally energizing punk slasher with all the f*cked up kills you will ever dream of. Poser #1 feels like an 80s slasher of the best kind. Not just because of the fact that it starts in the 80’s. It has that vibe felt even in the present of the narrative. It has such a Jason-esque presence to the book as a whole. Something that Miner carves out within the slasher film genre and puts into this comic that is all his own.Matt Miner creates his version of the slasher’s urban legends. The geek guy that tries his hand at being one of the cool kids. He’s shut down and called a poser. Then, he takes revenge against them by ripping them to shreds and becoming an urban legend? Yes, please, give me some more. The urban legend that Miner writes cement the story. He gives readers that all too important slasher comeback story. (See what I mean by Jason-esque?) He then brings a whodunit, suspense-like vibe when he comes back for more.Another thing that Miner does so brilliantly is lay out the cast of characters for you to wonder what’s inside their heads. He does this while withholding the secret history and problems between them. There are so much tension and so much history that you don’t even mind being left in the dark. It’s honestly far more intriguing if you are with this crew. It keeps you guessing and makes you wonder. We’re left with such small clues about their relationship towards each other. We feel the pulls, the resentment and more. Miner grants us a little look inside the puzzle with these characters. He also gives us a mystery to unfold with who the Poser killer might be. He does an excellent job in building the suspense and the dynamics but immediately attacks them while leaving you wanting more.via Waxwork ComicsClay McCormack’s art is legit to die for. McCormack brings a sinister, yet disturbing and ominous amount of details to Poser #1 that drives you further into the story even when the guts are being spilled on the floor. (I am in my horror pun heaven right now.) McCormack’s pen and ink create so much chaos within his panels and immediately becomes one with Miner’s story. It’s so punk and in your face and that’s what McCormack’s art does so perfectly to match. It thrives off the chaos and becomes cinematic within the panels. Even the kills from Poser have their signature look to them. It’s one that, again, succeeds off chaos while being absolute overkill but McCormick’s art fits so well within that.Another thing that I dig about McCormack’s art is the diversity he gives within the characters. He gives them their own distinct look and persona with Miner to make them sound out. You never see the same person twice in Poser #1. The diversity of these punks set my heart on fire personally and McCormack nails every one of them and how different the scene is within.via Waxwork ComicsDoug Garbark’s color creates such a horrific yet strange neon mood. This works so well to set the tone for McCormack’s art, and Miner’s script creates that magnifies it tenfold. Remember when I said that McCormack’s art is chaotic? Garbark’s colors have a feeling of a Larry Smith film (cinematographer of Bronson, Only God Forgives, Tau), which is often as chaotic. He lays the colors in a way that progresses into that feeling. Garbark brings violet neon purples that give you the nostalgic feel in the beginning. He then melts into a real natural palette. In the end, the chaotic elements of blue, pink, violet and more. The panels there really stand out because it’s the sign that the killer is back, bringing back those neon palettes to the bar that amps more of the 80’s panels that stand out. There’s no mistaking what Taylor Esposito can do with his letters. He has a way of placing that brings everything to your attention, even if you didn’t mean it to. Poser #1 captured everything that you love about Esposito’s lettering in a nutshell. The way his balloon placements set up in every panel that completes them and doesn’t block the art. The way he varies in his setting and placement. Lastly, the way he brings everything together so smoothly, so your eyes travel from panel to panel with Miner’s script.via Waxwork ComicsIf you’re a fan of horror, especially of the slasher variety, you’re going to absolutely fall for Poser #1. Honestly, I’d be so disappointed if at some point this wasn’t made into a movie. It’s got everything that you want in your go-to slasher lovefest. Glorious gore, brilliant characters, and a killer story make Poser #1 a comic that you’ll come back for again and again. Gourds and squashes (Cucurbita spp.) adapted to megafaunal extinction and ecological anachronism through domestication, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (2015). DOI: 10.1073/pnas.1516109112AbstractThe genus Cucurbita (squashes, pumpkins, gourds) contains numerous domesticated lineages with ancient New World origins. It was broadly distributed in the past but has declined to the point that several of the crops’ progenitor species are scarce or unknown in the wild. We hypothesize that Holocene ecological shifts and megafaunal extinctions severely impacted wild Cucurbita, whereas their domestic counterparts adapted to changing conditions via symbiosis with human cultivators. First, we used high-throughput sequencing to analyze complete plastid genomes of 91 total Cucurbita samples, comprising ancient (n = 19), modern wild (n = 30), and modern domestic (n = 42) taxa. This analysis demonstrates independent domestication in eastern North America, evidence of a previously unknown pathway to domestication in northeastern Mexico, and broad archaeological distributions of taxa currently unknown in the wild. Further, sequence similarity between distant wild populations suggests recent fragmentation. Collectively, these results point to wild-type declines coinciding with widespread domestication. Second, we hypothesize that the disappearance of large herbivores struck a critical ecological blow against wild Cucurbita, and we take initial steps to consider this hypothesis through cross-mammal analyses of bitter taste receptor gene repertoires. Directly, megafauna consumed Cucurbita fruits and dispersed their seeds; wild Cucurbita were likely left without mutualistic dispersal partners in the Holocene because they are unpalatable to smaller surviving mammals with more bitter taste receptor genes. Indirectly, megafauna maintained mosaic-like landscapes ideal for Cucurbita, and vegetative changes following the megafaunal extinctions likely crowded out their disturbed-ground niche. Thus, anthropogenic landscapes provided favorable growth habitats and willing dispersal partners in the wake of ecological upheaval. Cucurbita seeds were found in mastadon dung. Credit: Lee Newsom, Penn State Cucurbita pepo gourds. Credit: Public Domain Explore further Prior evidence has shown that plants of the genus Cucurbita, which includes pumpkins, gourds and squashes, flourished during the Holocene in areas where large mammals such as giant sloths, mastodons and mammoths roamed—the huge mammals not only trampled and grazed in such areas, clearing land that the plants needed to survive, but also dispersed their seeds via their dung—thus there’s was a mutually positive relationship. But then things changed, the climate grew warmer and humans arrived with their advanced hunting skills—over time, the large mammals ceased to exist. The squash and gourds soon found it much more difficult to survive in overgrown vegetation and had little to no means of seed dispersal, which, the researchers suggest, means they would have all gone extinct had humans not begun to domesticate some varieties. To come to these conclusions, the researchers studied gourd and other seeds found in preserved large mammal dung (going back 30,000 years), which revealed a wide variety of lost species. They also tested the degree of bitterness in ancient gourd skin and then compared what they found with the results of a genome study they conducted looking at bitterness sensitivity in 46 modern animals–they found that the ancient varieties were so bitter that they would have been toxic to very small mammals and unpalatable to those somewhat larger, leaving just the largest mammals able to consume Cucurbita. The evidence indicates that most Cucurbita species began to decline approximately 10,000 years ago, and that most of them eventually went extinct. Those that we favor today only survived because humans began using them first as containers and floatation devices for fishing nets, then later, as a food source, presumably as domestication led to sweeter varieties. Rent in Manhattan but Buy a Home in Baltimore Manhattan, New York and Santa Barbara, California are among the most expensive places to buy a home, but the best places to rent, while Baltimore, Maryland and Clayton County, Georgia, are the best counties to buy a home according to Realtor.com on Monday. To assist prospective homebuyers determine if renting an apartment or buying a home is the better option, Realtor.com used 2017 median prices and incomes in 500 counties. The research was geared for urban and suburban dwellers—as an average monthly house payment and rent may be close to the same figure with both continuing to rise. The report, listed several financial indicators to compile a list of home prices versus monthly rent in various U.S. counties: annual median rent, median house payment, mortgage, taxes, and insurance, along with median income. However, it did not factor in the costs of down payments or annual maintenance, as well as home appreciation, which can increase the value of a home over the years. The report indicated that if money were the only factor, the top county to rent and not buy a home is New York, New York, specifically Manhattan, where the rent may be $1,915 but home prices are approximately $2.2 million. Coming in second is Santa Barbara, California, where rent is $1,958 and homes cost approximately under $1 million.Other communities that made it to the top five rent don’t buy list included: Kings County, New York (Brooklyn); Monterrey County, California; and Suffolk County, Massachusetts (Boston).“Homeownership is the opportunity to build wealth. It also helps people be more stable. If there’s a recession and you lose your job for a year, then people can take out a home equity loan and get through the hard times,” said Joseph Kirchner, Senior Economist at Realtor.com.According to the report, the best areas to buy a home instead of rent were in Baltimore County, Maryland, where median rent is $1,443 compared to homes available for $257,000. The former CEO of the Cyprus Cooperative Bank (CCB) Nicolas Hadjiyiannis on Tuesday denied landing a job with the organisation solely because of his personal connections.Hadjiyiannis served as divisional manager at Bank of Cyprus before being hired as chairman of the CCB in November 2013. In December 2015 he was appointed CEO of the Co-op.He told the panel investigating the demise of the Co-op that his appointment to the CCB in 2013 came about after a certain political party tapped him for the job, for which he had expressed an interest.Though he did not name the party, it’s understood he was referring to ruling Disy.In his four-hour testimony, Hadjiyiannis spelled out what is common knowledge, namely that political parties had a say in who got appointed to the CCB after it was nationalised in 2013.He said parties would be asked to nominate individuals, with the names going to the cabinet. Later, the finance ministry would make a formal proposal to parliament, which ratified appointments following vetting carried out by the central bank. This, however, did not mean that the nominees’ sole merit was their party affiliation. But, Hadjiyiannis recalled, of the nine members of the CCB board at the time, only one was not proposed by a party. The former executive conceded that he was friends with Finance Minister Harris Georgiades, whom he knew from his college days as well as from the English School high school in Nicosia.“We have friendly relations, which have been demonised, they have become a burden for both of us,” he said. But, he insisted, friendship was one thing, and business another.Hadjyiannis said that he is currently on a contract with Sedipes, the asset management company set up to dispose of the defunct CCB’s residual assets. He is expected to terminate his employment by the end of the month. The chairman of the inquiry Giorgos Aresti cited a report compiled by the central bank – the regulator of the CCB – which described the 2014 purchase of a new car for Hadjiyiannis as unnecessary and wasteful, particularly at a time when the Co-op was being propped up by the taxpayer. In his defence, Hadjiyiannis said all chairmen at large banks have a service car, which in his case was deemed necessary because of his extensive duties. The former executive was also asked about a memo from the auditor-general, according to which two individuals were hired to assist Hadjiyiannis – one on €55,000 per annum, and the other person (a personal assistant) on €22,000.The two individuals were ostensibly hired for the purpose of forging strategy. However, as the auditor-general pointed out, this was gratuitous as the bank’s strategy was explicitly set out in the restructuring plan for the CCB.Hadjiyiannis disagreed, arguing that the bank needed people on point to handle day-to-day developments. On regulators’ concerns over lax corporate governance at the Co-op, the former CEO said these were unfounded, given that non-performing loans were dropping while new loans had a default rate of just 1 per cent. But the balance sheet deteriorated when European banking authorities revised the criteria for loan provisions, essentially wiping out the value of collateral for primary residences. The Co-op’s single largest non-performing loan did not exceed €30m, Hadjiyiannis said.During Tuesday’s proceedings, it emerged that two disciplinary procedures had been carried out against Hadjiyiannis prior to his appointment, including one for harassing a referee before a football game. The inquiry heard that the first case concerned the violation of capital controls imposed after the island’s messy bailout deal in 2013. It related to the payment of four cheques worth around €300,000 on behalf of a law firm while he was at Laiki Bank.Hadjiyiannis had also approved payment of €6,000 by the same law firm. The reason for the second disciplinary procedure was because he had harassed a referee before a football game in 2011 using his office telephone. No other details were immediately available.Hadjiyiannis, according to the panel, had been reprimanded in the second instance. The former CEO suggested that the issue with the disciplinary probes was raised in 2015, when he was going to be appointed, in a bid to hurt the Co-op bank.Of the first procedure, he said it concluded without there being a penalty before he had left Bank of Cyprus – which absorbed certain Laiki operations – to join the Co-op months later.Hadjiyiannis said BoC CEO John Hourican wrote to the European Central Bank explaining what had happened. It had taken the European supervisor a few months to approve the appointment in December 2015.Hadjiyiannis will continue testifying on Wednesday. You May LikeUltimate Pet Nutrition Nutra Thrive SupplementAdd This One Thing To Your Dog’s Food To Help Them Be HealthierUltimate Pet Nutrition Nutra Thrive SupplementUndoLuxury Crossover SUV I Search AdsThese SUVs Are The Cream Of The Crop.
