(May 5, 2019)–Winless in three starts last year and idle since Dec. 30, George and Martha Schwary’s homebred Ippodamia’s Girl broke running and kept on going to register a major gate to wire upset in Sunday’s $69,000 Santa Anita allowance feature, prevailing by 1 ½ lengths while getting a flat mile on turf in 1:35.04. Ridden by Rafael Bejarano and trained by Andrew Lerner, the 4-year-old Stormy Atlantic filly finished like a filly with a big future.“She’s a classy filly,” said Lerner, who took over training duties from William Morey about one month ago. “I thought she was tight enough today. We put a seven eighths (work) in her (on April 15) and a couple three quarters before we blew her out three eighths last Wednesday.  She’s stakes caliber.”Tracked throughout by eventual runner-up Ms Peintour, Ippodamia’s Girl seemed to relish being on the lead. A quarter mile out, Ms Peintour got to her right flank, but from there, the winner was simply too much.Fifth, after leading early under same allowance conditions here on Dec. 30, Ippodamia’s Girl was off at 21-1 and paid $44.00, $22.00 and $13.00.Bred in Kentucky and out of the Peterhof mare Ippodamia, Ippodamia’s Girl, who won the ungraded Blue Norther Stakes here in December, 2017 when trained by Mike Puype, is now 9-3-2-1 and with the winner’s share of $41,400, she now has earnings of $146,170.“It looked like the only other speed in the race was the number three (Achira),” said Bejarano. “When they took her back, my filly was on the lead, so I just went for it.”Ridden by Joe Talamo, Ms Peintour kept to her task and prevailed by a neck over Flammetta for second money. Off at 10-1, Ms Peintour paid $11.80 and $7.60.Flammetta, who was third throughout, was ridden by Flavien Prat and just held the show spot by a nose over Achira. Off at 8-1, Flammetta paid $7.00 to show.Fractions on the race were 23.24, 47.33, 1:11.57 and 1:23.23.Live racing will resume at Santa Anita on Friday, with first post time at 1 p.m. The track will be open for simulcast wagering on Wednesday and Thursday, with admission gates opening at 10 a.m. Free General Admission and parking are offered on all weekdays and free Club House admission is also offered each Friday. For additional information, please visit santaanita.com or call (626) 574-RACE.last_img read more
