North and South Sudan make significant progress on steps for separation –

“Much of the ground work has already been completed. Both parties are engaging seriously and making progress,” Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s Special Representative Haile Menkerios told the Security Council, citing agreement in principle on open borders, good neighbourly relations, non-interference in each other’s affairs, a framework for non-aggression and military cooperation, citizenship, residency and property ownership.The two sides are also working towards mutually beneficial arrangements on oil revenue sharing and other economic matters, he said.Mr. Menkerios was briefing the Council following the 7 February announcement of the official results of the South’s referendum showing that an overwhelming majority opted for secession from what until now has been Africa’s largest country.The vote was the culminating point of the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) ending two decades of civil war between the North and the South that killed some 2 million people and drove an estimated 4.5 million others from their homes, and Mr. Menkerios noted that “against the odds” the Sudanese Government not only contributed to holding the referendum but accepted its outcome.“Indeed, 7 February will have to be remembered and celebrated in Sudan’s and Africa’s history as a day when the longest running civil war in the continent’s recent history came to a definitive end, when the spirit of peace and cooperation prevailed over the spirit of war,” he said, voicing the hope that “the goodwill generated by the referendum will translate into increased momentum and finalization soon” of all post-referendum arrangements.He noted that both sides have committed to resolve by the end of March the status of Abyei, an area straddling northern and southern Sudan, that was due to have voted in a separate but simultaneous referendum on which side it would join. But a referendum commission has yet to be established there, and there is still no agreement on who would be eligible to vote.Throughout the referendum period, the nearly 10,500-strong UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) intensified its peacekeeping patrols in Abyei after reports of clashes between Arab Misseriya nomadic cattle-herders linked to the North and the Dinka ethnic group linked to the South.Mr. Menkerios noted that Abyei police have committed to withdraw its units from the field into the town, allowing the seasonal Misseriya migration to start, while the Misseriya have agreed to remove roadblocks currently preventing traffic from entering Abyei from the north.“Serious challenges remain, however,” he warned. “Despite tireless efforts by UNMIS to support improved inter-tribal relations, tensions in the area continue. Given the delicacy of the current environment, I urge all parties to redouble their efforts to keep the peace on the ground, while taking advantage of the political momentum they have built in other areas to conclusively address the deeper issues driving the conflict in Abyei.”As for the future of UNMIS, Mr. Menkerios said the South has indicated it would welcome UN engagement to consolidate peace and capacity building of the new State’s institutions, while discussions are continuing with the North on areas where they may seek future cooperation with the UN.“This is a new, historic moment for Sudan, a new dawn that, if built upon, can lead to sustainable peace and progress in Sudan and contribute to the same in the immediate region and throughout the continent,” he concluded.Commending the conduct of the vote, former Tanzanian president Benjamin Mkapa, head of the panel appointed by Mr. Ban to monitor the referendum, called on the parties to utilize the momentum created by the successful completion of the process to reach lasting agreement on post-referendum arrangements “so that the people of Northern and Southern Sudan can live together side by side in cooperation, security and dignity.”At the same time, he urged the international community to redouble its efforts to assist Sudan in the coming months.In a presidential statement, the Council called on the international community to lend its full support to help all Sudanese people build a peaceful and prosperous future, saying it looked forward to welcoming an independent South Sudan as the UN’s 193rd member after its expected formal declaration of independence on 9 July. 9 February 2011North and South Sudan have made “significant” progress on a wide range of follow-up arrangements between the two States following the southern region’s vote for independence, the top United Nations envoy in the country said today. read more

There’s a tremendous amount of young people coming out of the school systems that we hire. They’re hungry, and skilled and knowledgeable in the latest technologies.”But even with an annual wave of new expert workers and a community of studios famously cooperative and supportive of each other, the competition for talent can be fierce.For instance, the annual Montreal Game Summit is a conference where game designers and innovators gather to share their ideas and innovations as well as their stories of success and failure with one another. But landing the very best talent can turn otherwise friendly companies into rivals in an industry where the average salary is more than $77,000.Indeed, Lipes said, human resources has been the company’s biggest challenge as it grows.“There’s a lot of competition. Finding talent and putting the right people in place is always a challenge,” he said. “We have a great HR team that draws locally, but we’ve also brought in employees from across Canada to join us.”Another big key behind Budge’s growth was partnering with the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC), which has backed its vision since the very start and helped it plan for — and succeed in achieving — profitability almost since day one.“BDC was an early supporter of what we were trying to do here,” Lipes said. “They take a very entrepreneurial approach to supporting businesses. They really want to see innovative Canadian businesses grow and become strong.”The next phase of Budge’s growth focuses on its action games division, Budge Games. Over the past couple of years it has hired 25 new people to fill technically specialized roles in the development of Transformers: Bumblebee Overdrive, the division’s first game.Despite being based on a kids’ toy, the game is geared for players of all ages. It contains a strong dose of action — including frenetic racing and intense battles — that sets it apart from Budge’s games designed with younger kids in mind.Both Lipes and Elman believe this is the perfect time to broaden their company’s demographic to include older players. Kids who have been playing Budge games from an early age are now ready for more sophisticated games, and their parents — many of whom also play games on their mobile devices — have come to trust the brand through the apps their kids have played.“We want to grow our company with our audience,” Elman said. “A lot of these kids are older now, and we want to widen our demographic to include them. We want to make games the whole family can play together.”Also acting in their favour is that long-time partner Hasbro came to them a couple of years ago with the idea of making an action-oriented game based on the movie Bumblebee, which hit theatres just before Christmas. It was the perfect IP for Budge to leverage while making its transition.“Transformers fans are young and old,” Elman said. “It’s for everyone. It’s perfect for us to line up with. It meant we could create a game for the whole family. It meant we could grow our company.
