Pinellas County: Upham Beach Project on Hold

first_imgThe Upham Beach stabilization project has been temporarily suspended due to projected rough winter weather, the Pinellas County said in their latest release. Two of the four planned rock T-groin structures to slow erosion of the beach have been completed since the project started in August. The contractor, Weeks Marine, will reassess the weather in late January or early February to determine when they can resume the project.A fenced staging area containing stored materials for constructing the northern two rock groin structures will remain at the site. All other areas of Upham beach will be open to the public until the contractor returns to finish the project.Once work resumes in 2018, the contractor estimates it will take an additional three to four months to complete the project.Upon resuming work, the project area restricted from public access will largely be isolated to the north end of the beach, said the county.[mappress mapid=”24721″]last_img

Liverpool unveil Anfield plans

first_img Liverpool are asking residents, fans and local businesses to give their views as part of its planning application which the club expects to submit in the summer. “As part of our proposed stadium redevelopment project we have unveiled the detail of our ambitious plans for an expanded Main Stand and Anfield Road stand and are embarking on a consultation process which will shape and inform our planning application,” said Ayre. “In order to move forward with our expansion plans we need to have certainty that we can navigate the complex planning process and secure the support of the community, local home owners, businesses and other key stakeholders. “This consultation exercise is an important part of this process. “We started this journey just over 18 months ago and a lot of work has already been done, there is still an incredible amount to do, but good progress has been made so far and we are proud to be able to unveil our plans.” Redevelopment of the Main Stand will take its capacity to 21,000 and if planning approval is granted work could start early next year and be completed in time for the 2016-17 season. Incorporating the iconic club crest into the proposed Main Stand’s exterior elevation, the scheme will also include a two-storey podium and a carefully designed cloister which will become the new home for the Hillsborough Memorial. The Main Stand will open onto a wide public concourse which will link the stadium into the wider Anfield area. Liverpool have unveiled their plans for the redevelopment of Anfield which would take capacity close to 60,000 in the next few years. Managing director Ian Ayre described the proposals to add 8,500 to a revamped Main Stand and about 4,800 to the Anfield Road end as “ambitious”. The club’s detailed proposals will be available for public consultation this week alongside exhibitions on what the future holds for the ground and the surrounding Anfield area. Liverpool City Council has confirmed negotiations with the remaining few property owners in the area surrounding the ground are progressing well and all parties are close to agreement but there are still details to be finalised. “This is another important step in our ambitions to transform the Anfield area, bringing new jobs, investment and housing,” said Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson. “The overall regeneration of Anfield will see £260million invested in the local community and will deliver hundreds of jobs – Liverpool Football Club’s proposals for the stadium are a key part of this. “We are all committed to delivering a brighter future for Anfield and the club’s exhibition is a clear signal that real progress is being made with all our plans.” While steps are being made off the pitch, giant strides have been made on it, and manager Brendan Rodgers claims owners Fenway Sports Group are delighted with the progress. Principal owner John W Henry and chairman Tom Werner were both in attendance for the crucial victory over Manchester City 10 days ago which strengthened the Reds’ grip at the top of the Premier League. Rivals Chelsea visit this Sunday in what could be the pivotal game in the title race but with Champions League qualification already assured, FSG are set to reward Rodgers with a significant summer transfer kitty in order to strengthen his squad with the likelihood a new contract will also follow. “I think they saw the development of the club and of the team and they were very complimentary,” the Reds boss told the Liverpool Echo. “It’s important for them to see that progress across the football club. “They are absolutely delighted with what they’ve seen over the past 20 months and we talked about how we can keep the club moving forward because that’s vitally important. “It’s been an ongoing process since I arrived here. We don’t want it to be just for this season, we want to sustain it over a longer period. “That’s something that was pretty clear for us all in the discussions we had when I came in. “We wanted to establish something that would be in place for a long time.” Additional finances guaranteed from next season’s Champions League have been bolstered by the signing of another multi-year commercial deal – this time with sandwich restaurant chain Subway. Petr Cech looking for Arsenal bounce ahead of Bayern showdown

first_imgGoalkeeper Petr Cech is confident Arsenal can use the momentum of two strong Barclays Premier League performances to give themselves the perfect build-up for tackling Bayern Munich. Press Association Arsenal put the match beyond the hosts when substitute Olivier Giroud doubled their lead on 68 minutes, and Aaron Ramsey then stabbed in a third. Arsene Wenger’s squad have little time to refocus before they return to Champions League action against the Bundesliga giants, who look in imperious form both in Germany and Europe. Cech, however, believes the manner in which Arsenal dispatched both United and then Watford under testing circumstances can only stand them in good stead as they aim to kick-start their bid to qualify from Group F following successive defeats. “It is always difficult going away for the internationals and you come back home and everyone comes back at different times. You have only one day to prepare and you play away from home against a good team that was very solid at home in their previous games,” he said. “We knew it was going to be a difficult game, so we needed to be patient.” Cech added: “We had a really big game against Manchester United last week before the internationals, so when you win those games (you have to) win another game. “We treat everybody with the same respect, so the three points are vital for us.” Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores had again set his side up to be hard to break down, a trend which has served them well at home this season since returning to the top flight. The Gunners resumed domestic action following the international break looking to carry on from the rout of Manchester United, and they delivered another impressive display when winning 3-0 at Watford in Saturday’s late kick-off. It took an hour, though, for the Hornets’ battling resistance to finally be broken when the in-form Alexis Sanchez swept home following a swift counter-attack. But despite all of their endeavour – with former Tottenham midfielder Etienne Capoue and captain Troy Deeney leading the charge – the Hornets lacked real sting in the final third. Deeney’s raw power caused the Arsenal centre-backs plenty of problems, and the forward believes focusing on the positives of what was a largely industrious display will be key for the challenges ahead. “It was a harsh lesson in what the Premier League big boys are all about,” Deeney said on Hornets PlayerHD. “We were good for 65 minutes, more than held our own and created a lot of chances, but one counter-attack and that is the difference.” Deeney added: “But let’s be realistic, we have just come into the Premier League, we are not expected to just go and beat Arsenal. “However, we gave the fans something to cheer about and showed what we can do, so the challenge for us now is to make that 65 minutes last 90 minutes against Stoke away (next week).” last_img read more

Badgers neglected, still win

first_imgFootball, men’s basketball and men’s hockey may be the most popular varsity sports at Wisconsin, but last year, the men’s rowing team was the most successful. At the IRA National Championship in Cherry Hill, N.J., the Badger rowing team beat out previously unbeaten and top-ranked Washington to take home the trophy, winning their first IRA title since 1990.“We were going to go out and just have a good race, that’s all that we could do,” junior Ross James said. “We didn’t necessarily know that we were going to win — we were just trying to have a good race.”The Badgers did in fact have a good race, edging the Huskies by 1.5 seconds to claim first place. Although Wisconsin was only a slight underdog, the team still felt overwhelmed by the victory.“No matter how confident you are … it’s definitely pretty surreal,” UW head coach Chris Clark said. “There’s no question that your competitive spirit is flowing so high that it’s just incredible.”James found the victory just as thrilling as Clark did. The sophomore was one of five underclassmen of the team’s eight.“It’s almost overwhelming; it’s kind of hard to grasp at first,” James said. “Eventually it seeps in, and it feels great.”Despite winning the national championship, the Badgers received little recognition from local media and UW fans. Being a non-revenue sport, Wisconsin rowing gets little attention regardless of its success.“Rowing is its own worst enemy like a lot of other sports,” Clark said. “In order to have media coverage, you need a lot more people rowing. … People need to be able to gain a connection to it, then people will start to pay more attention to it.”Few know about the success of the men’s rowing team in part because few, if any, major newspapers have covered it. Even though the Badgers won the national title, Wisconsin rowing has seemingly been neglected by local journalists.“It does get frustrating sometimes when newspapers choose to put out what they think people are really interested in,” Clark said. “Sometimes you see a huge article about a JV basketball team, and varsity sports at a university get ignored. Sometimes, that can get disappointing.”Nevertheless, Clark and the rest of the team are looking beyond the lack of coverage, working hard to compete again this coming season, as the Badgers will boast a veteran squad this season with five returning starters.“We have a lot of guys coming back, and it will be really good to have that leadership, especially for the younger guys who just joined varsity and the freshman who are on the team,” James said.Winning the national championship last year does not necessarily mean things will be easy for Wisconsin this season. Clark knows there is always room for improvement, and the success of the team relies on its ability to stay focused.“We’ve got some good guys on the team. … They’re too good to go slow,” Clark said. “We’re not going to surprise anyone — everyone knows we’re going to be pretty good, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have to work hard to get where we want to be.”As the team moves on from last season, it will try to win back-to-back IRA titles for the first time since it won three straight from 1973 to 1975, when UW was at the top of its game. The Wisconsin team will try to make UW fans and local media give them the recognition they deserves. For now though, the Badgers are just going to forget everything else and try to win.“We’re hoping to build off of what we’ve done,” James said. “But it’s a new season, and we want to keep winning and we can’t keep our past success from getting to our heads.”last_img read more

10 facts you need to know about Gennadiy Golovkin

first_imgThere are a rare few who don’t succumb to the punishment, and Golovkin is in that breed. Out of the 390 times Golovkin’s stepped through the ropes — 350 amateur fights and 40 as a professional — he’s never paid a visit to the canvas.SponsorsLike fighters who compete in mixed martial arts, boxers often secure sponsorship. Since Golovkin is at the top of the food chain in the sport, he’s been able to lock in a couple of top-line companies.Golovkin has deals with Samsung, Tecate, Apple and Nike. His association with Nike is part of the Jordan Brand. Golovkin was only the third boxer to be associated with perhaps the greatest basketball player of all time, joining former world champions Andre Ward and Roy Jones Jr. New fighting homeFor over six years and 18 fights, Golovkin fought exclusively on HBO. His last fight on the network was his majority decision loss to Saul “Canelo” Alvarez back in September. The premium network aired a couple more fight cards and then exited the boxing business at the end of 2018. Join DAZN and watch GGG-Rolls: Sign up in U.S. | CanadaAfter being courted by several promotions and media outlets, Golovkin announced in March that he signed a six-fight deal with DAZN that starts with the Rolls bout this weekend. Out with the oldSince August 2010, Golovkin had called Abel Sanchez his head trainer. Sanchez helped mold Golovkin from a virtual unknown coming to the United States to make it in the boxing business and become one of the most ferocious fighters in the sport. Sometimes though, change is needed to gain a fresh perspective. After going 0-1-1 in two thrilling bouts with Alvarez, Golovkin parted ways with Sanchez in April and switched to former heavyweight contender and trainer for former unified heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, Johnathan Banks. Fighting in his native countryThe 37-year-old native of Kazakhstan has returned home for only one fight as a professional. The homecoming came in his 20th fight when he defended his WBA (regular) title against Nilson Julio Tapia in December 2010. Golovkin put on a show for his hometown fans, knocking out Tapia in the third round to successfully defend the belt for the first time.Winning an Olympic medalAfter winning the 2003 World Amateur Boxing Championships in the middleweight division and defeating former world champions Andy Lee and Lucian Bute along the way, Golovkin tried his hand at representing Kazakhstan in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. During the tournament, Golovkin beat former world champion Andre Dirrell. But he came up short in the gold medal match, losing to Russian Gaydarbek Gaydarbekov to take home the silver medal.Who really won the Canelo vs. GGG rematch?Knockout streak for the agesWhen you mention the name Gennadiy Golovkin, people bring up his devastating knockout power. Golovkin began his career in May 2006 and finished off his first eight opponents. After going the distance in three of his next five fights, Golovkin went on a remarkable run in which he knocked out 23 consecutive opponents that catapulted him as the most dangerous man in boxing, the unified middleweight champion and one of the sport’s most popular fighters.Middleweight title historyBernard Hopkins holds the record for most title defenses in middleweight history at 20. But they aren’t consecutive because of Hopkins going to a no-contest against Robert Allen in August 1998 when the referee accidentally pushed Hopkins out of the ring.Golovkin broke the record of 14 by the legendary Carlos Monzon when “GGG” made his 15th consecutive defense, knocking out David Lemieux in the seventh round in October 2015.Unique speaking abilityGolovkin was born in Karaganda, Kazakh SSR, Soviet Union on April 8, 1982, to a Russian father, who was a coal miner, and a Korean mother, who worked in a chemical lab. Since Golovkin is from Kazakhstan and is half Korean, you might think he speaks both of those languages. That would be incorrect as Golovkin speaks Kazakh, Russian, English and German. BrothersGolovkin grew up with three brothers. He had two older ones named Sergey and Vadim as well as a twin, Max. It was Sergey and Vadim who encouraged Gennadiy to give boxing a try when he was 8. But they were unable to witness their younger brother reach the pinnacle of the sport, as both passed away while serving in the Russian army when Golovkin was a teenager. Max, an elite amateur boxer in his day, and Gennadiy are very close to this day, as the former helps his brother in training camps and is always in his corner on fight night.Granite chinThroughout a career, boxers get hit with some vicious shots to the head. It only becomes a matter of time before you get dropped to the canvas.  Gennadiy Golovkin makes his 2019 debut Saturday night when he takes on against Steve Rolls in a super middleweight bout contested at 164 pounds from Madison Square Garden, live and only on DAZN.Before the former unified middleweight champion steps through the ropes one more time, Sporting News takes a look at some things you may not know about the Kazakhstan star.last_img read more

There are a really good buy and they look great on all kids. Apart from the the time it took with standard delivery it was totally worth it. It’s a gre product and the colours go with most outfits. I’ve attached a pic so you can see what they look like. It’s great value for money and you can’t get abetted deal than this one from most places. Superglue and for your money you get a very good buy so overall i’m very happy. A lot of the bows were broken which i’m slightly dissapointed in because they were all the colours that were my favourites but it’s nothing thay can’t be fixed with a bit if superglue and for your money you get a very good buy so overall i’m very happy, would give it 3. 5 if i could instead of 3 which seems a bit harsh. last_img read more
